Essential Pilot Gear for the Beginner Student Pilot

12th Oct 2020

As a student pilot, having the right gear is just as essential as the actual activity of flying.  Proper gear will make sure you keep safe, comfortable, and sharp in the cockpit.  The best part is you can choose a wide range of accessories that fit your style without compromising functionality. We will go over some must-have pilot gear for the beginning flight student.

1.  Flight bag

First things first, you need a bag to store all your essentials.  A strong bag that's big enough to store all essential items is key. While you might be tempted to go and pick an off-the-shelf backpack, we recommend choosing a bag that is specifically designed for aviation.  Such a backpack will have all the compartments you need to easily organize your pilot accessories.

2. Books

From checklists to publications and test preps every pilot needs certain books for home study and on the job. You can invest in flight training books on different topics such as aerobatics, aerodynamics, and maneuvers.  Some of the books are available digitally so all you need to do is invest in the right software. If you prefer hard copies these are also available in airport supply stores.  Don't be worried if you don't know what to buy yet. As you continue with your training, you'll find more information on what books to buy.

3.  Headsets

You need a good headset to carry in your flight bag always. While you still have an alternative to use what's already in the aircraft, having your own is always good because you have more control over the quality and experience you get. There are several high-quality headsets on the market.  You may go for the professional-grade headsets that may cost up to $1000. There are some inexpensive entry-level headsets that perform fairly well.  After using the headsets for a while you'll probably identify your key features and choose one that meets all your desires.

4.  Logbook

You are required to keep a written record of your flying experience.  This is done in a logbook.  A good logbook will make it easy for you to document all the information you need, so be very specific when choosing one. There are professional and standard logbooks as well as crew logs to choose from. You can also choose from a range of different logbooks accessories depending on your needs. You may start with a simple paper logbook and then later upgrade to an electronic version like an online or phone app.

5.  Pens, notepad, and kneeboard

There are many other digital flight planning tools that you may need as a student pilot. For instance, the usual pens and papers are a must-have should the electronic devices fail. You may also consider getting a decent kneeboard.  This simply works like a clipboard that prevents your paper from moving.

There are many other accessories that you may need as part of your pilot gear.  Enjoy as you shop around for high-quality products at a pilot supply store that you trust.
