AMT (Aviation Maintenance Technician) Training

18th Oct 2022

An AMT career is lucrative but getting the qualifications is challenging. You must meet all the requirements of the FAA, such as undergoing the proper training and testing to gain all the specialized skills that distinguish you from aircraft mechanics. The primary role of aviation maintenance technicians is to maintain or repair engines, avionics, and other aircraft parts. That entails working with the latest technology and the best minds in the aviation industry.

How to become an AMT

Gain the required knowledge
Knowledge is the most fundamental part of being an AMT. That necessitates finding an ideal college or university, which you can do with the help of the Aviation Technician Education Council. Coursework differs - most programs require approximately one and a half years to two years. Some topics you might cover include polishing and cleaning an aircraft, keeping up with inspections and safety requirements, maintenance techniques, and completing overhauling an aircraft.
Some considerations to prioritize when searching for a school include the cost versus quality of education, industry connections or the rate of job placements for the program, training techniques highlighted in the curriculum, and reviews from previous students.
AMT training focuses more on technicians’ ability to complete repairs and maintenance routines efficiently and expertly within the shortest possible time. You will undergo intense training programs to prepare for the practical exams and real-life experiences afterward. The training involves applying various maintenance techniques on different aircraft types at varying times -the AMT school determines the aircraft you start with, but you will handle multiple aircraft. Most schools offer specific maintenance curriculums as part of the standard training. Many do not include rotor maintenance in their programs, but you can get it at an extra cost.
Get FAA certification
The FAA certification comes after undergoing training successfully, including passing the necessary tests. The tests include an oral exam, a knowledge test (usually computerized), and a physical exam. You can get all the skills and tests from the AMT school.
Airframe and Powerplant certifications are more important, and you can get either or both to become a licensed A & P mechanic. That certificate enables you to work anywhere around the globe. You can also apply for any other certification in an area of specialization you have an interest – it depends on how you want to advance your skills. Examples include Designated Airworthiness Technicians, Avionics Technicians, and Authorized Mechanics.
Gain experience
You can gain experience by working at an FAA Repair Station under the supervision of a licensed mechanic or by joining the armed services as an aircraft mechanic. If you choose the former option, you will have to put in at least 18 months for the Airframe or Powerplant certificate separately. An alternative is 30 months for both.
